Bull/Bear Weekly Recap: Apr 25-29 2011

Быки

+ Earnings and revenues for various bell-weathers portray improvement in corporate performance. Revenue-beat rates are the highest since the bull market began (there’s your top line growth bears). A steady trend of share buybacks and increased dividends will keep the bull market trend in place since March 2009 intact as companies return profits to investors.

+ The Bull Market rolls on as the Dow Theory is confirmed with both DJ Transportation & Industrials averages breaking through their prior bull market highs. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq have finally confirmed as well by breaking their previous bull market highs set in Feb. Even better, there’s a good bit of skepticism out there in regards to this latest breakout, the wall of worry remains.

+The Chicago Fed National Activity Index points to above-trend economic growth and refutes claims that economic activity has fallen. Manufacturing continues to lead the way and the report points to strong contributions from the Job market. Small businesses are slowing recovering and hiring is increasing in breadth.

+ Durable Good Orders rise a healthy 2.5%, while core-capital goods rise a strong 3.7%. Orders have now risen for 3 straight months. Shipments climb for the 5th straight month as well. Meanwhile, Chicago’s Midwest Manufacturing Output index increases 1.9% led by strong auto-related production. Finally, ATA truck tonnage levels and recent railroad data point to continued expansion in the manufacturing sector.

+ Consumers continue to spend as evidenced by recently released weekly sales metrics and the Restaurant Index. Easter demand has been solid thus far. Consumers have become accustomed to higher gas prices and continued improvement in the job market will ensure that spending growth continues.

+ The Conference Board reports that consumer confidence for April continued to stabilize as the “current conditions” component rose for a 7th straight month. The recovery continues. Plans to buy a house, an auto, or an appliance rose in renewed confidence that incomes will improve in the months ahead. This confirms recent improvement from the University of Michigan sentiment survey.

+ Despite all the bearish chatter, manufacturing orders continue to pile up for the Eurozone and confirms that the recovery continues in that region. Strong demand from Asia confirms that the global restructuring is taking place.

- Jobless claims disappoint again surging to 429K, marking the highest level since January while last weeks’ claims were revised....guess. Job growth has effectively stalled as more companies find it better to seek cheap labor outside of the US and heightens the risk for protectionist sentiment coming from Washington in the months ahead if things don’t improve.

- The housing double-dip is knocking at the door as Case-Schiller Home-Price Index reports the 7th straight month of lower prices. What led us into the Great Recession has just recommenced its second dip. The banks are sweating as well. They have clearly failed to participate in the latest run up in equity prices (XLF, BKX). Bank balance sheets are not prepared for a double-dip in home prices.

- Manufacturing around the nation is showing signs of a considerable slowdown in growth as Dallas, Richmond, and Kansas manufacturing surveys come in way below expectations. Manufacturers in Richmond signal that Inflationary pressures will be hitting the consumer very soon and bodes ill for an already fragile consumer confidence...

- ...and speaking of consumer confidence, we got more bad news on that front as well as the Gallup Poll reports yet more deterioration. The Bloomberg Consumer Comfort survey has followed suit as well. Meanwhile, UK consumer confidence is probing the 2009 depths of despair (austerity is a sharp double-edged sword).

- The Eurozone continues to simmer. Portugal, for the second time now, revises its deficit upwards from 8.6% to 9.1%. Same deal with Greece (restructuring seems inevitable here). Next victim for the bond vigilantes? Spain would be a too big to bail out economy if it came under stress and it has been lately.

- Signs continue to come from China that things are getting pretty hairy over there. While the S&P 500 broke through to bull market highs, the Shanghai Composite just broke below its 50-day moving average. Inflation is getting worse in China as officials haven’t done enough to quell sticky wage-fueled inflation. Growth is slowing as well. All these signs point to a stagflationary scenario in the upcoming quarters.

- Q1 GDP comes in a mediocre 1.75% (less than expectations), with the all important Real Final Sales metric (=end-demand) registering a pitiful 0.8%, the lowest since Q3 ‘09 and much lower than the 6.7% rate in Q4. Cuts at the state and local gov’t level are being felt as well. While Consumption did rise higher than expectations, let’s not forget that oil prices averaged under $100 a barrel.

Antitrust: Commission probes Credit Default Swaps market

Bill Gross Battles Dealers on Outlook as Treasuries Gain ,

While Gross, who runs Pacific Investment Management Co.’s $236 billion Total Return Fund, is betting against government debt, the 20 firms that trade with the Federal Reserve predict yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note will hold below 4 percent for a third straight year for the balance of 2011.

“I could join the dealers and say the 10-year’s not going to go to 4 percent, so what am I left with?” Gross said in a telephone interview April 20. “I’m left with an under-yielding, less-than-inflation security. I have better choices. As a firm we’re not going to put up with it.”

“What’s telling is the significant volume of buying when 10-year yields were above 3.50 percent and 30-year bond yields were around 4.65 percent,” said William O’Donnell, head U.S. government bond strategist at RBS Securities Inc. in Stamford, Connecticut, a primary dealer. “There’s still significant demand for long-end Treasury paper at those levels and I don’t think Bill Gross is going to make that demand disappear.”

Demand at Treasury auctions has risen to record levels this year, with investors submitting $3 in orders for every $1 of debt offered, data compiled by Bloomberg show. At this month’s auctions of three-, 10- and 30-year bonds, the so-called bid-to- cover ratio exceeded the average of the previous 10 sales.

Gross eliminated Treasuries from his fund in February and then, in March, bet that the debt will lose value, according to the firm’s holdings statement released April 11. The Total Return Fund has averaged an 8.65 percent gain the past five years, beating 99 percent of its peers, Bloomberg data show.

While Pimco’s $1.24 trillion in assets under management commands the attention of investors, foreign central banks and sovereign wealth funds exert a bigger day-to-day pull on Treasury yields, said John Fath, who manages $2.5 billion at BTG Pactual in New York.

“Gross’s point is well-taken and ultimately I think he will be right,” said Fath, former head of Treasury trading at primary dealer UBS AG. Even so, “if these guys are willing to hold these securities at these levels, it’s going to be hard to see rates go up,” he said in reference to overseas investors.

Foreign holdings of Treasuries jumped $36.4 billion to $4.47 trillion in the first two months of the year, according to the Treasury. U.S. financial markets should be stable over the long term, even after S&P’s warning, Xia Bin, an adviser to the Chinese central bank, said last week.

*T Primary Dealer Forecasts for 10-Year Yields

Firm June 30 Dec. 31 Bank of America 3.6 4 Barclays 3.5 3.75 BNP Paribas 3.7 4.25 Cantor Fitzgerald 3.63 3.88 Citigroup 3.4 3.6 Credit Suisse 3.5 3.75 Daiwa 3.7 4.1 Deutsche Bank 3.25 4 Goldman Sachs 3.5 3.75 HSBC 3.7 3.4 Jefferies 3.9 5 JPMorgan Chase 3.6 3.7 MF Global 3.7 3.9 Mizuho 3.5 4 Morgan Stanley 3.6 4 Nomura 3.25 3.6 RBC 3.5 4 RBS 3.25 3.6 Societe Generale 3.85 3.5 UBS 3.6 3.8 Average 3.56 3.87

Так выглядит график 10-year US Treasuries.

US Treasuries.

Mohamed El-Erian, chief executive and co-chief investment officer at PIMCO

S&P reaffirmed this morning the AAA rating of the US but, importantly, slapped a “negative outlook” on the rating due to concerns on how the country will address its “very large budget deficits and rising government indebtedness.” In justifying this dramatic move, it noted that “there is a material risk that US policymakers might not reach an agreement in how to address medium- and long-term budgetary challenges by 2013.”

This is a timely reminder of the seriousness of America’s fiscal issues, for the country and for the rest of the world.

The continued failure to come up with a credible medium-term fiscal reform program would increase borrowing costs for all segments of US society, thereby undermining investment, employment and growth. It would also curtail foreigners’ appetite to add to their already substantial holdings of US assets. And it would weaken the dollar.

The US also risks eroding its standing at the core of the global monetary system.

The world looks to America for a range of “global public goods” — including the reserve currency, the deepest and most liquid government debt markets, and the “risk free” standard. With no other country able and willing to step into this role, the result would be global efficiency losses and a higher risk of economic and financial fragmentation.

S&P’s warning should be heard loud and clear in Washington DC, hopefully acting as a catalyst for faster convergence on a credible medium-term fiscal package. It is also a reminder of risk to the global economy, as well as the generalized deterioration in the sovereign credit quality of several advanced economies.

The time has come for the US (and other advanced economies) to take better control of its fiscal destiny—for the sake of American society and for the well being of the global economy.

Bob Janjuah:

Glad I put my note out last week. Folks way too focused on eurozone, where ORDERLY restructuring of greece and maybr too ireland and port, and meaningful fiscal adjustment, are both part of the l-t credible solution and where acceptance of this is a good thing in the long run as it means the euro and ECB are credible and not at risk of fiat money printing.

At the other end we have the US where the mrkt is way way too complacent abt the fast deteriorating credit risk of USA Inc., and where the hope for credible and meaningful fiscal adjustments are a mere dream, and where we have a central bank that knows only 1 (failed) trick – money debasement.

S&P GLOBAL SOVEREIGN RATINGS HEAD SAYS NEITHER OBAMA NOR REP. RYAN PLAN ENOUGH TO FIX DEFICIT– REUTERS INSIDER

S&P GLOBAL SOVEREIGN RATINGS HEAD SAYS GULF BETWEEN U.S. PARTIES ON DEFICIT PLAN HAS NEVER BEEN WIDER– REUTERS INSIDER

S&P GLOBAL SOVEREIGN RATINGS HEAD SAYS U.S. DOLLAR WELL ENTRENCHED AS WORLD RESERVE CURRENCY, WILL BE SLOW TO CHANGE– REUTERS INSIDER
